Zumiez operates 479 stores with cutting edge clothing styles, footwear, equipment and accessories. The stores cater to young men and women between the ages of 12 and 24 who seek popular brands representing a lifestyle centered on activities that include skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding, BMX and motocross.
Zumiez has 457 stores in the United States, 17 in Canada and five in Europe. In the United States and Canada, it operates under the name Zumiez and in Europe under the name Blue Tomato.
Most of Zumiez stores, which average approximately
2,800 square feet, feature couches and action sports oriented
video game stations that are intended to encourage our customers
to shop for longer periods of time and to interact with each
other and our store associates. To increase customer traffic,
stores are generally located near busy areas of the mall such
as food courts, movie theaters, music or game stores and other
popular teen retailers.
The brands Zumiez currently offer include
Billabong, Burton, DC Shoe, DVS Shoes, Element, Etnies, Hurley,
Quiksilver, Roxy and Volcom, among many others.
In fiscal 2011, Zumiez reported sales of $555.9 million, a 16.1% increase, and net income of $37.4 million. The company said it plans to open 50 new stores this year including 10 in Canada.
The company was founded in 1978 by Thomas
Campion with its first store in Northgate Mall in Seattle. The
company went public in 2005.
