Yelp is the leading online provider of reviews of local businesses by members including restaurants, hotels, salons, dentists, mechanics, plumbers and more.

The company reported over 120 million users a month at the end of 2013 with over 53 million total reviews written by users. According to the company, shopping businesses were the top reviewed category with 23% of all reviews followed by restaurants at 20%. 60.2% of Yelp visitors are college educated.

More people are accessing Yelp via mobile devices with an average of 10.6 million users per month.

Yelp communities have taken root in major metros across the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Australia, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Singapore, Poland, Turkey, New Zealand, the Czech Republic, Brazil and Portugal.

The company moved into a new headquarters building in San Francisco in November 2013.

In 2013, Yelp reported revenue of $233.0 million, a 69% increase, and net loss of $10.0 million.


Yelp was founded by Jeremy Stoppleman and Russel Simmons, who were software engineers at PayPal. It was initially supposed to be an e-mail recommendation service but became a web-based service instead.

The company received venture capital funding from Bessemer Venture Partners, Benchmark Capital and DAG Ventures.

The company reportedly turned down an acquisition offer from Google in 2009.

Yelp went public on the NYSE on March 2, 2012 at $15 per share.

Yelp reviews were integrated into Apple's Maps app in iOS6 in 2012.
