Website: http://www.wellpoint.com WellPoint is the nation's leading health benefits company serving the needs of 33.3 million members nationwide and more than 69 million people through all of its subsidiaries. WellPoint is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association and serves its members as the Blue Cross licensee for California; the Blue Cross and Blue Shield licensee for Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri (excluding 30 counties in the Kansas City area), Nevada, New Hampshire, New York (as Blue Cross Blue Shield in 10 New York City metropolitan and surrounding counties and as Blue Cross or Blue Cross Blue Shield in selected upstate counties only), Ohio, Virginia (excluding the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C.), Wisconsin; and through UniCare. In 2010, the company reported revenues of $57.8 billion, a 4.9% drop, and net income of $2.9 billion. Medical enrollment exceeded 33.3 million members at December 31, 2010, a decrease of 347,000 members, or 1.0 percent, from approximately 33.7 million at December 31, 2009. The decline occurred in the Company's non-Blue business, which experienced a reduction of 516,000 members, primarily due to the strategic transfer of UniCare Individual and Group business in Texas and Illinois to another Blue Cross & Blue Shield plan at the beginning of 2010. The decline in non-Blue enrollment was partially offset by growth of 119,000 members in Blue-branded Commercial products, an increase of 56,000 members in the Federal Employee Program ("FEP"), and growth of 44,000 and 23,000 members, respectively, in the Senior and State Sponsored businesses. The Company's Blue-branded Individual membership declined by 73,000 during 2010. As of December 31, 2010, the Company's membership base was approximately 59 percent self-funded and 41 percent fully insured, compared with 54 percent and 46 percent, respectively, as of December 31, 2009. History WellPoint was formed when WellPoint Health Networks Inc. and Anthem, Inc. merged on Nov. 30, 2004. WellPoint Health Network Inc.'s predecessor was Blue Cross of California, which was founded in 1982 with the consolidation of Blue Cross of Northern California (established in 1936) and Blue Cross of Southern California (established in 1937). WellPoint was formed in 1992 to operate Blue Cross of California's managed care business. In 1993, Blue Cross of California spun off its managed care business into a separate publicly traded entity, WellPoint Health Networks Inc. In 1996, Blue Cross of California completed the conversion of all its business to for-profit status, resulting in a restructuring that designated WellPoint Health Networks Inc. as the parent organization. Anthem, Inc. grew out of two Indianapolis-based corporations formed in 1944 and 1946 as mutual insurance companies. Those two companies were created to provide health insurance to residents of Indiana as Blue Cross of Indiana and Blue Shield of Indiana. They eventually merged to form Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Indiana. In October 2001, Anthem demutualized and conducted an initial public offering of common stock. WellPoint acquired WellChoice of New York for $6.5 billion in a deal that closed at the end of 2005. WellChoice was the parent of Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, the biggest health insurance firm in New York with over 4.8 million members. Benefits - Medical Coverage
