As of December 31, 2008, the company served nearly 20 million municipal, commercial, industrial, and residential customers through a network of 367 collection operations, 355 transfer stations, 273 active landfill disposal sites, 16 waste-to-energy plants, 104 recycling plants, and 111 beneficial-use landfill gas projects Waste Management is the largest recycler of municipal solid waste in North America. It also looks to find beneficial uses for landfill gas, working with local businesses and utilities. In 2008, Waste Management commissioned eight new landfill gas power plants and expansions with the capacity to generate a total of 25 megawatts of power, and a liquid waste disposal facility fueled by landfill gas. For all of 2008, Waste Management had total revenues of $13.39 billion and net income of $1.08 billion. The company was formed in 1998 with the merger of USA Waste Services and Waste Management.
