Virgin America is an airline that flies to more than 20 destinations in the U.S. and Mexico. Its main hub is San Francisco International Airport.
Virgin America is known for its mood-lit cabins, three beautifully designed classes of service and innovative fleetwide amenities -- like touch-screen personal entertainment, WiFi and power outlets at every seat.
The airline will begin service to Hawaii in 2015.
In five years of flying, Virgin America has won several major travel awards for the quality of its service. The airline’s no black-out date frequent flyer program Elevate has grown to 3.4 million members.
The airline flies all new Airbus A-320 planes with 110-volt power outlets, USB and RJ-45 ethernet jacks in every seat. Wi-Fi is also on board all planes. An on-seat entertainment system offers 24 channels of live TV and 25 on-demand movies. Seat-to-seat chat messaging is also available. Virgin America currently has 53 aircraft in service.
Virgin America charges fees of $25 each for the first and second bag.
The company went public in November 2014.
In 2014, Virgin America reported revenues of $1.48 billion, a 4.6% increase. Net income was $60.1 million. The airline reported average fares in 2014 of $204.27 and average fuel costs of $3.08 per gallon.
"2014 was a remarkable year for Virgin America on every front," said David Cush, Virgin America's President and Chief Executive Officer. "We achieved record profitability and significantly strengthened our balance sheet by going public in the second largest airline IPO in history. Both our existing and new investors have shown confidence in our low-cost, high-amenity business model -- and we've continued to sweep the major travel awards for both operational excellence and our innovative service. Importantly, we ve also continued to exceed the industry average in Revenue per Available Seat Mile (RASM) growth and also shown a significant RASM premium on some of the nation s most competitive business routes. Our 2014 results are a credit to both our guest-focused Teammates and a consistent, award-winning product."
History
The airline launched in August 2007 and was founded by the Virgin Group of England led by billionaire Sir Richard Brinson.
