History

The company was founded in the 1880s on a single act of kindness.

A mill worker at Eagle & Phenix Mill in Columbus, GA caught her dress in a piece of machinery. As her dress tore, her life savings, which she had sewn into her hem thinking it was the safest place for her money, spilled across the floor.

G. Gunby Jordan, the mill's secretary and treasurer, happened by and offered to keep her money in the mill safe and pay her monthly interest on the deposits. He soon offered the same service to all the mill workers. These first deposits inspired Mr. Jordan to establish the institution that years later became Columbus Bank and Trust Company, Synovus' lead bank.

The company has grown with dozens of acquisitions of smaller banks in Georgia and the Southeast.

We offer a competitive benefits package, including medical, dental and vision plans, and our team members can select the appropriate plans to meet their own unique needs. We pay a significant part of the costs for medical coverage, which includes coverage for prescriptions. The Dental Plan includes an option for orthodontic coverage. The Vision Plan includes coverage for frames, lenses and contacts.
Flexible Spending Accounts
Flexible Spending Accounts help our team members reduce the costs of medical, dental, vision and dependent care expenses by allowing them to benefit from the use of pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible health or dependent care expenses.
Insurance Plans
Our team members take comfort in knowing that their families will benefit from the assistance of our insurance plans in the event of a serious injury or death. These insurance plans are completely paid for by the company. Supplemental plans are available to our team members at reduced costs.
The company provides Long-Term Disability insurance to all eligible team members with an option to increase the coverage at the team member's expense. All premiums are paid on an after-tax basis, so that the benefit is tax-free.
Retirement Plans
Our retirement package is one of the strongest in the industry. We want to help our team members build a financially secure future for themselves and their families. Each component of our Wealth Building Plan provides incentives for team members to exceed performance goals; and collectively, the components provide a way for us to thank team members for a job well done.
Money Purchase Pension Plan. Synovus contributes 7 percent of a team member's salary per year to this account.
Profit Sharing. Synovus contributes up to 7 percent of a team member's salary per year in a profit sharing account, depending on company performance.
401(k). Synovus contributes up to 7 percent of a team member's salary - depending on company performance - to a 401(k) account. Team members can also elect to deduct up to 79% of their salary for their 401(k) account each pay period.
Stock Purchase Plan
Synovus will match 50 cents for every employee dollar in a stock purchase plan.
Discounts on Banking Services
Eligible team members can take advantage of discounts on a wide array of bank services, from checking and savings accounts to credit cards.
Adoption Assistance
Synovus is committed to supporting each team member's work/life issues, and also recognizes the importance of providing opportunities to give every child a home and family. The Synovus Financial Corp. Adoption Assistance Plan provides financial assistance toward expenses incurred when you adopt a child. The Plan covers reimbursement for a maximum of two adoptions, with assistance capped at $5,000 per adoption ($6,000 for U.S. special needs adoption) and up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year according to the Family and Medical Leave Act.
