History

Twin brothers Leo and Cleo Slater opened their first Stater Bros. supermarket in Yucaipa, CA on August 17, 1936. They purchased the market from W.A. Davis with a $600 downpayment and first month payment of $300. The brothers would soon be joined by their other brother Leroy in the new business.

In April 1948, the brothers opened their first "super" market in Riverside, CA with 12,500 square feet which included fluorescent lighting, air cooling and an intercom system that could play music.

In 1983, Stater Bros. was sold to an investment group that included La Cedena Investments, headed by current CEO Jack Brown and other members of the company's senior management.
