SONIC, which specializes in made-to-order fast food, is known for its specialty menu items and personal service. The chain has 3,517 locations coast-to-coast of which 3,129 are franchised.
SONIC Unique menu items include TOASTER Sandwiches (sandwiches served on thick Texas Toast), Extra-Long Cheese Coneys (hot dogs with chili and cheese), fresh-made Onion Rings, Tater Tots and a variety of Frozen Favorites Drinks Treats and Fountain Favorites Drinks. Hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, salads and breakfast are also available.
At a typical Sonic Drive-In, customers park in one of 20 to 36 canopy-covered spaces and place orders through a speaker system. A smiling Carhop on roller skates delivers the customer’s order car-side. Customers also may enjoy patio dining or drive-thru service at many Sonic locations. The company is developing smaller stores that feature only 16 spaces.
Personal Carhop service is one of the many reasons customers enjoy visiting SONIC.
SONIC Corp. is an Oklahoma City-based, publicly held company that owns, operates and franchises SONIC Drive-Ins.
For fiscal 2013, there were 27 new drive-in openings including 25 new franchise drive-ins. There are 40-50 new franchise drive-in openings expected in 2014.
Sonic reported revenues of $542.5 million in fiscal 2013, down slightly from the previous year, and net income of $36.7 million. Same-store sales increasd 2.3% in the past year.
The company had average drive-in unit sales of $1.10 million in 2013.
In 1953, the prototype of the first SONIC Drive-In opened in Shawnee, OK. SONIC was founded by Troy Smith and was originally named Top Hat Drive-In, the name was changed to SONIC in 1959.
In the 1950s, SONIC's unique use of curbside speakers to allow customers to place food orders without ever leaving their cars, spawned the slogan "SONIC, Service with the Speed of Sound."
In recent years, that slogan has been replaced with "SONIC, America's Drive-In."
