Six Flags, Inc. is the world's largest
regional theme park company with 21 theme parks in North America
made up of theme, water and zoological parks.
Six Flags has licensing deals with DC Comics
and Warner Bros. to feature cartoon characters at its parks including
Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester, Superman, Batman,
Robin, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and The Flash.
The company has been unprofitable over
the past few years and has seen attendance drop at its parks.
The company sold seven of its parks earlier this year to Parc
7F-Operations Corporation ("PARC") of Jacksonville,
FL for $312 million, consisting of $275 million in cash and a
note receivable for $37 million.
The seven parks sold were: Six Flags Darien
Lake in Buffalo, NY; Six Flags Elitch Gardens in Denver, CO;
Frontier City and the White Water Bay water park in Oklahoma
City, OK; SplashTown in Houston, TX; Waterworld USA in Concord,
CA; and Wild Waves and Enchanted Village in Seattle, WA.
In 2006, Six Flags had revenues of $945.7
million and a net loss of $305.6 million. Results do not include
parks that were sold. Attendance at company parks for the year
was 24.8 million, down 13% from 28.7 million in 2005.
The company relocated its corporate headquarters
from Oklahoma City to New York in 2006.
History
Six Flags was founded by Texas oil barren
Angus Wynne, the father of the modern-day theme park. Mr. Wynne
set out to create a destination that would capture the excitement
and wonder of the imagination. With Angus' vision and the support
of the Texas community, Six Flags Over Texas opened in 1961.
The first Six Flags park took its name
from the six countries whose flags had flown over Texas throughout
the state's history.
Six Flags Over Texas featured six sections
reflecting the spirited cultures of those nations -- and offered
guests a vibrant experience straight out of their dreams.
Mr. Wynne envisioned theme parks of a grand
scale -- bigger than Disneyland -- located in different regions
across the country, making them convenient and affordable to
families everywhere.
Six Flags Over Texas was the world's first
"pay-one-price" theme park. In 1961, Six Flags Over
Texas introduced the one-price admission at $2.95 including tax.
This type of pricing was a revolutionary concept at the time.
Soon after, parks around the country were following Six Flags
Over Texas in implementing a one-price admission.
