Six Flags has licensing deals with DC Comics
and Warner Bros. to feature cartoon characters at its parks including
Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester, Superman, Batman,
Robin, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and The Flash.
Six Flags’ wide array of entertainment options reaches all demographics — families, teens, tweens and thrill seekers alike — featuring themed attractions based on skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, the ultimate daredevil Evel Knievel, movie franchises The Dark Knight and The Mummy; as well as world-renowned, kid-friendly brands including Looney Tunes, the Justice League of America, The Wiggles and Thomas the Tank Engine.
In 2009, Six Flags reported revenues of $912.9 million, down 11%. The company reported a net loss of $194.0 million on a 6% decline in attendance. The company has experienced several years of losses due to the weak economy and lower attendance at theme parks.
The company plans to open a new theme park in Dubai.
History
Six Flags was founded by Texas oil barren
Angus Wynne, the father of the modern-day theme park. Mr. Wynne
set out to create a destination that would capture the excitement
and wonder of the imagination. With Angus' vision and the support
of the Texas community, Six Flags Over Texas opened in 1961.
The first Six Flags park took its name
from the six countries whose flags had flown over Texas throughout
the state's history.
Six Flags Over Texas featured six sections
reflecting the spirited cultures of those nations -- and offered
guests a vibrant experience straight out of their dreams.
Mr. Wynne envisioned theme parks of a grand
scale -- bigger than Disneyland -- located in different regions
across the country, making them convenient and affordable to
families everywhere.
Six Flags Over Texas was the world's first
"pay-one-price" theme park. In 1961, Six Flags Over
Texas introduced the one-price admission at $2.95 including tax.
This type of pricing was a revolutionary concept at the time.
Soon after, parks around the country were following Six Flags
Over Texas in implementing a one-price admission.
The company relocated its corporate headquarters
from Oklahoma City to New York in 2006.
