History

The company was founded in 1967 when James P. Ryan leaves Ryan Homes to found The James P. Ryan Company in Columbia, Maryland. James P. Ryan calls his homes "Ryland Homes". That name was created when he saw a sign that said "Maryland". The "M" and the "A" on the sign were covered, and that combination of Ryan and Maryland seemed like a perfect name for his homes.

The company went public in 1971.

In 2000, Ryland relocates its Corporate Headquarters from Columbia, MD to Calabasas, CA.
