Register.com lets anyone buy and register
Internet domain addresses. Domains can be registered under .com,
.net, .org, .us, .biz, .info, and .cc. Domains can also be registered
in over 240 country codes such as .uk (United Kingdom) and .jp
(Japan). The company has more than 3 million domain names under
management.
Register.com offers its services to small-
and medium- sized businesses, large corporations and individual
consumers. Additionally, Register.com partners with ISPs, Web
hosting companies and other online businesses that wish to resell
the Company's domain name registration service. The company charges
$35 per year for each domain name.
Register.com is in a very competitive business
with other domain registrars offering names at lower prices.
The company is now privately held after
it was purchased for $200 million in 2005 by Vector Capital Corporation,
a San Francisco-based private equity firm.
In May, Register.com sold its Corporate
Services Division to Corporation Service Company, a privately-held
firm and leading provider of financial and legal services to
corporations and law firms. Register.com's Corporate Services
Division provided online brand protection to large corporations
with significant domain name portfolios.
Register.com was founded in 1994 and went
public in March, 2000.
