Stock in Publix is available only to employees and is not publicly traded. Only employees and members of the Board of Directors can purchase stock at certain times of the year. The market price of Publix stock is determined by the company's Board of Directors, following estimates by independent appraiser.
The company was founded by George Jenkins who opened the first Publix store in 1930 in Winter Haven, FL.
