History
In 1972, Al Copeland opened a fast-food restaurant called Chicken on the Run in a suburb of New Orleans which featured mild fried chicken. Business was slow so Copeland decided to spice up the chicken and reopened the restaurant as Popeyes, named after the character Popeye Doyle from the movie French Connection.
Soon, Popeyes added 500 restaurants over the next decade and opened its first international location in Toronto in 1984.
In 1989, Copeland Entrerprises, which operated Popeyes, bought the Church's chicken chain. Copeland Enterprises filed for bankruptcy in 1991.
In 1992, America's Favorite Chicken Company, Inc. is created as the new parent company to Popeyes and Churchs. The company changes its name to AFC Enterprises, Inc. in 1996.
