Plug Power designs and develops on-site
energy systems based on fuel cells. Plug Power's strategic partners
include GE Fuel Cell Systems, DTE Energy Technologies, Vaillant
GmbH, Honda R&D Co., Ltd., Engelhard Corporation and PEMEAS
GmbH. The Company's headquarters are located in Latham, N.Y.,
with offices in Washington, D.C., and The Netherlands.
The technology behind fuel cells is still
under development and Plug Power has yet to turn a profit. In
2007, the company lost $60.5 million with revenues of just $16.2
million.
The Company is actively engaged with private
and public customers in targeted markets throughout the world,
including North America, Europe, the Middle East, Russia, South
Africa and South America.
History
Plug Power was founded in 1995 as a joint
venture between DTE Energy, parent of Detroit Edison (Michigan's
largest electric utility) and Mechanical Technology Inc., an
early developer of fuel cells.
In 2007, Plug Power acquired General Hydrogen.,
a private company providing fuel cell power solutions to the
material handling market. It also acquired Cellex Power Products
Inc., a private company and a leader in providing fuel cell power
solutions to lift trucks and other material handling equipment.
