PetSmart is the largest specialty pet retailer of services and solutions for the lifetime needs of pets. The company operates more than 1,404 stores in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, providing a broad range of competitively priced pet food and pet products; services including pet training, pet grooming, pet boarding and pet adoption services. Stores are stocked with more than 10,000 products, all available at everyday low prices.
PetSmart also operates 202 in-store PetsHotels dog and cat boarding facilities and Doggie Day Camps. These overnight boarding and daycare facility for dogs and cats, offer an exclusive promise, featuring caregivers who are hand-picked for their love of pets and are on the premises 24 hours a day.
Customers adopt an average of 1,000 pets per day from PetSmart Charities Adoption Centers located inside every PetSmart store.
There is a Banfield Pet Hospital in more than 60 percent of stores which operates full-service pet hospitals. These hospitals operate independently of PetSmart and employ more than 1,000 veterinarians who provide a full range of health care and emergency services. PetSmart holds a 20.5 percent equity interest in Medical Management International, the operator of Banfield, Pet Hospital.
In December 2014, the company entered into an agreement to be acquired by a consortium led by BC Partners, Inc. at a price of $83.00 per share in cash. The deal is expected to close this spring.
History
Founders Jim and Janice Dougherty incorporate their pet superstore concept as Pacific Coast Distributing, Inc. in 1986. Their first two stores, originally called PetFood Warehouse, open in Arizona in 1987.
In 1989, the company changes its name from PetFood Warehouse to PETsMART and opens the first full-service grooming salon as well as bird, fish and small pet departments. The company becomes PetSmart in 2005.
The company went public on Nasdaq stock market in 1993.
