in the U.S. Paychex's core client is the small- to medium-sized
company, but Paychex also meets the special needs of larger businesses
with its Major Market Services.
The company offers comprehensive payroll
services, including payroll processing, payroll tax administration,
and employee pay services, including direct deposit, check signing,
and Readychex. Human resource and benefits outsourcing services
include 401(k) plan recordkeeping, workers' compensation administration,
section 125 plans, a professional employer organization, and
other administrative services for businesses.
Paychex is based in Rochester, NY, and has more than 100 locations around the country.
In fiscal 2013, Paychex revenues were $2.3 billion, a 4% increase, and net income was $569.0 million. The company reported more than 570,000 clients.
History
B. Thomas Golisano founded the company
in 1971 with just $3,000 and a good idea how to make it easy
and affordable for small businesses to outsource their payroll
processing. He saw the huge untapped market: 98 percent of American
businesses have fewer than 100 employees, something that still
holds true today. Golisano went to his employer at the time,
a regional payroll processor for big businesses, with his plan.
The company wasn't interested, so Golisano struck out on his
own. He launched Paychex with just one employee.
That single operation grew to include 18
franchises and partnerships, which were eventually consolidated
into one private company in 1979. Four years later, in 1983,
Paychex went public and began trading on The Nasdaq Stock Market.
