NY Times Launching Free Classified TabloidPOSTED June 2, 2005 NEW YORK, NY -- The NY Times is launching a free tabloid paper in New York. Starting June 9, the Times will distribute MarketPlace Weekly, a free tabloid-sized listing of classified ads, supplemented by articles from The Times's Job Market, Real Estate, Automotive, Business and Dining Out sections, among others. The weekly how-to-find-it, where-to-get-it guide is designed to reach New York City residents and the large commuter population. It will be distributed mostly at subway and train locations in the region. "MarketPlace Weekly will meet the increasing demand of residents in the five boroughs, and commuters in the metro region, who are eager to read more about the products, services and opportunities available to them in our area, " said Thomas Carley, president, news services, The New York Times. "This new guide combines the best of two worlds - great resources with great reading." The NY Times is hoping to boost the visibility of its classified section which is threatened by a growing number of websites offering them for free. There are also two free daily tabloids, Metro NY and amNewYork, supported with regular and classified advertising. "The guide is a wonderful complement to The Times's Sunday classified section," said Jyll Holzman, senior vice president of advertising, The New York Times. "Advertisers will have an expanded opportunity to reach even more potential customers." The Times will market the guide with an initial distribution of 150,000 copies per week throughout all five boroughs and at major transportation hubs. Street teams strategically positioned at over 250 commuter centers including Grand Central Terminal, WTC PATH, Pennsylvania Station, the Port Authority, the Staten Island Ferry, Jamaica Station and Hunters Point in Queens, Flatbush Avenue and the Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, and The Grand Concourse in The Bronx, will hand out the weekly during the peak afternoon travel times of 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. MarketPlace Weekly will be available every Thursday. The guide will also be given out at select college campuses in the city.
