In 2004, the company reported revenues of $6.7 billion and a loss of $116.1 million. Sales were down from $7.7 billion in 2003.

In September, Newell announced it will cut 5,000 jobs and close 1/3 of its 80 manufacturing faciities to reduce costs. The company plans to increase investment in new product development and marketing.

History

1902 - Newell Manufacturing Company, Inc., a manufacturer of curtain rods, founded in Ogdensburg, NY.

1962 - The Newell Companies, including Western Newell, Newell Window Furnishings, and Newell Manufacturing, are consolidated into a single corporation headquartered in Freeport, IL.

1972 - Newell stock goes public.

1998 - Newell acquires Calphalon Corporation, a manufacturer of gourmet cookware marketed primarily to upscale retailers and department stores.

1999 - Newell acquires Rubbermaid, a leading manufacturer of high-quality, innovative products, including the Rubbermaid, Curver, Little Tikes, Graco and Century user brands.

2000 - Gillette's stationery products business is purchased including the Paper Mate, Parker, Waterman and Liquid Paper user brands.
