MTV Networks is a division of Viacom
and operates some of the hippest and hottest cable television
networks. These include MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, Country Music
Television, SpikeTV, Nick at Nite and TV Land.
MTV literally changed the face of music
on August 1, 1981 when it launched as a 24-hour channel featuring
videos of top music songs. "Video Killed the Radio Star"
by the Buggles was the first video aired on MTV. Now fans could
see the music as well as listen to it.
MTV quickly became one of the most popular
cable channels especially among younger viewers. While MTV's
popularity has grown, it has gone away from the music videos
that it featured around the clock and eventually created its
own original programming. The program Real World aired on MTV
in 1992 as the first reality TV show and soap opera. It featured
seven attractive people in their early 20s living in a New York
apartment with cameras following their every move for several
months. The show became a hit and has aired for 11 seasons with
a new cast living in a different city each year. The success
of Real World has spawned the countless number of reality TV
shows now blanketing the airwaves, including MTV's own Newlyweds
show, featuring the husband and wife duo of Nick Lachey and Jessica
Simpson.
All this success has made MTV the world's
most widely distributed television network, reaching nearly 400
million subscribers in 166 countries and territories. Nickelodeon
serves nearly 170 million subscribers worldwide via localized
channels, branded blocks and individual programs. VH1 reaches
more than 107 million subscribers around the world, and Comedy
Central reaches more than 85 million subscribers in all 50 states
and U.S. territories.
MTV Networks is headquartered with Viacom
on Broadway at Times Square. Its network center is located on
Long Island.
