Lord and Taylor operates a chain of upscale department stores with 49 locations and four outlet stores. The stores sell fine clothing for men and women, shoes, jewelry and accessories.

The chain's flagship store is on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

Lord and Taylor is owned by NRDC Equity Partners, which also owns Canadian firm Hudson's Bay Company. In Canada, HBC operates Hudson's Bay, Canada's largest department store with 90 full-line locations and one outlet store.

The company is planning to open a new store in Crossgates Mall in Albany, NY later this year.

History

Lord and Taylor was originally founded in 1826 by Samuel Lord who opened a store on Catherine Street in Manhattan to sell women's clothing.

Lord and Taylor opened its flagship store on February 24, 1914 on Fifth Avenue between 38th and 39th streets. The store has been designated a NYC landmark.

The chain was acquired by May Department Stores in 1986. In 2005, May was acquired by Federated Department Stores, parent of Bloomingdale's and Macy's.

NRDC Equity Partners purchased Lord and Taylor for $1.2 billion in 2006.
