J.Crew began in 1983, when the first catalog
was launched. The company opened its first store in 1989 in the
South Street Seaport of Manhattan. Over the years, the business
has grown from a mail-order start-up to an American brand known
worldwide for its sophisticated, fun clothing and accessories.
J.Crew now has 176 retail and 51 outlet
stores across the country. The company is known for selling preppy
clothing, shoes and accessories. It mails more than 60 million
catalogs a year.
In January of 2003, Millard "Mickey"
Drexler joined the company as CEO and Chairman. He was previously
CEO of the Gap. Drexler has
increased the company's standard for quality, design, and style
by using the finest fabrics, craftsmen, and mills throughout
Europe and the U.S.
In June of 2006, J.Crew went public on
the NY Stock Exchange. The company launched Crewcuts in early
2006, a collection of childrens' clothing for ages 2-8 now available
online at J.Crew.com, at twelve J.Crew stores and at two new
freestanding locations. The company also opened two new stores
this year called Madewell, featuring modern clothing for women.
