In the United States as of December 31, 2008, the Company operated 23 pulp, paper and packaging mills, 157 converting and packaging plants, 19 recycling plants and three bag facilities. Production facilities at December 31, 2008, in Europe, Asia, Latin America and South America included eight pulp, paper and packaging mills, 53 converting and packaging plants, and two recycling plants.

IP distributes printing, packaging, graphic arts, maintenance and industrial products through over 237 distribution branches in the United States and 35 distribution branches located in Canada, Mexico and Asia. The company owns or manages approximately 200,000 acres of forestlands in the United States, approximately 250,000 acres in Brazil and had, through licenses and forest management agreements, harvesting rights on government-owned forestlands in Russia.

International Paper was incorporated in Albany, NY in 1898 through a merger of 17 pulp and paper mills.

For 2008, the company reported revenue of $24.8 billion and net loss of $1.28 billion.
