The company has operations in more than 20 countries, employs approximately 60,000 people worldwide with operations in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Latin America. 42,000 are located in the U.S. For 2006, the company reported revenue of $21.9 billion and net income of $1.1 billion. International Paper was incorporated in Albany, NY in 1898 through a merger of 17 pulp and paper mills. In the United States, International Paper operates 18 pulp, paper and packaging mills, 94 converting and packaging plants, and five wood products facilities. Operations in Europe, Asia and Latin America include eight pulp, paper and packaging mills and 44 converting and packaging plants. The company distributes printing, packaging, graphic arts, maintenance and industrial products principally through more than 250 distribution branches located primarily in the U.S. Over the past year, International Paper announced it would sell its beverage packaging business for approximately $500 million. Additionally, the company sold 13 lumber mills for approximately $325 million and five wood products plants for approximately $237 million.
