History

Prior to its name change in January 1997, IKON Office Solutions was known as Alco Standard Corporation. Alco had functioned as a successful holding company since the 1960s, with operations in a variety of industries such as steel, gift and glassware, food service, aerospace, paper and office products.

Fueled by strong cash flows from its distribution businesses and strategic divestitures, by September 30, 1992, Alco had become a highly focused distribution company with only two business groups-paper and office products.

Strong internal growth and an aggressive acquisition program led to the rapid advancement of the office products group, with revenues reaching $4.1 billion by September 30, 1996. As a result of increased competition against Alco's own paper distribution customers, the paper distribution business was spun off to Alco shareholders in December 1996 as a separate, publicly owned company. The following January, Alco officially changed its name to IKON Office Solutions, Inc. to more clearly and uniformly define the business and its future direction.
