History
In 1919, Conrad Hilton purchases his first
hotel, The Mobley, in Cisco, TX. In 1925, Conrad builds
the first hotel to carry the "Hilton" name: "The
Hilton," in Dallas.
By 1938, Hilton would operated its first
property outside Texas: The Sir Francis Drake in San Francisco.
The company would move its headquarters to Los Angeles in 1942.
Hilton would become the first coast-to-coast
hotel chain in the United States in 1943 with the purchase of
two hotels in New York City: The Roosevelt and The
Plaza.
In 1946, the Hilton company became the
first hotel corporation to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
In 1949, Hilton leases the Waldorf-Astoria
in New York.
Hilton International (now a wholly owned
subsidiary of Hilton Group) was spun off from HHC in 1964. Hilton
Hotels Corporation continued to operate hotels separately in
the U.S. and Conrad International Hotels Corporation, a subsidiary
of Hilton Hotels Corporation, operates hotels outside the U.S.
There are more than 2000 Hilton, Conrad International, and Vista
hotels in 50 countries, and the reunification of the brand further
enhances Hilton's leadership position in one of the world's fastest
growing industries.
In 1970, the company entered the gaming
business with the purchase of the Las Vegas Hilton and Flamingo
Hilton in Vegas.
In 1999, the company acquired Promus Hotel
Corporation, which expanded the family of brands to include Hampton
Inn, Doubletree, Embassy Suites Hotels, and Homewood Suites.
In February 2006, Hilton Hotels completed
the acquisition of its international division for about $5.7
billion which adds 80 international properties. The move brings
the international unit together with the company which was originally
spun off in 1964.
