The company's brands include Hanes, Champion, Playtex, Bali, L'eggs, Just My Size, Barely There and Wonderbra.
Hanesbrands was spunoff from Sara Lee in September 2006 as an independently-traded company.
Hanesbrands is the largest seller of apparel essentials in the United States as measured by sales. In a recent survey, Hanesbrands products could be found in eight out of 10 American households. They are sold in thousands of stores, plus on the Web and by catalog.
The company has over 50,000 employees in more than 25 countries.
In 2010, the company reported sales of $4.33 billion, an 11.2% increase, and net income of $211.2 million.
“Our sales growth in 2010 was broad-based with increases in nearly every country and in every category except sheer hosiery,” CEO Richard Noll said. “Sales increased with nine of our top 10 U.S. customers, led by impressive market share growth, most notably in men’s underwear with share growth of nearly 5 points and share growth of 1 to 2 points each for socks, activewear, plus-size women’s apparel, and bras.”
History
The company's origins began in 1901 when J. Wesley Hanes founded Shamrock Mills, a manufacturer of men's hosiery.
In 1902, Wesley's brother Pleasant Hanes founded the P.H. Hanes Knitting Company and introduced two-piece men's underwear. In 1910, Shamrock Mills changes its name to Hanes Hosiery Mill and begins to make women's hosiery. In 1920, Hanes Knitting expands into undershirts, briefs, sleepwear and knitted shorts.
In 1965, the brother's two companies would merge to form Hanes Corporation, believed to be the only merger of two companies bearing the same family name.
In 1972, L'eggs is formed as its own company and becomes the most successful hosiery brand ever. The famous Hanes Beefy-T shirt is launched in 1975.
In 1979, Hanes merges with Consolidated Foods Corporation and eventually becomes part of Sara Lee.
Hanes would sign Michael Jordan in 1989 as company spokesperson.
Wonderbra made its debut in 1994.
