Garmin International Inc. is a member of the Garmin Ltd. group
of companies that designs, manufactures, and markets navigation
and communications equipment for the aviation and consumer markets.
Garmin Ltd. is incorporated in the Cayman
Islands, and its principal subsidiaries are located in the United
States, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. Garmin International headquarters
are in Kansas.
Garmin GPS devices help drivers find roads
and directions from video screens installed on their vehicle
dashboards.
Garmin products serve aviation, marine,
automotive, wireless, OEM, and general recreation applications.
The company has more than 50 products and has sold more than
5 million units worldwide.
The company has offices in the U.S., Europe
and Asia.
Garmin had revenues of $3.1 billion in
fiscal 2007 and net income of $855.0 million.
History
The company was founded in 1989 by engineers
Gary Burrell and Min Kao who were looking to develop products
to improve naviagation. The company was initially called ProNav
but they changed it in 1991 when sued by another company with
a similar name. The new company name was formed by merging the
first names of the founders "Gar" and "Min."
The company went public in 2000.
