EBay is the world's leading online marketplace. It is the best known Internet site for buying and selling goods with over 276 million individual users and small businesses around the world. People spend more time on eBay than any other online site, making it the most popular shopping destination on the Internet.

On an average day, there are millions of items listed on eBay. People come to eBay to buy and sell items in thousands of categories from collectibles like trading cards, antiques, dolls, and housewares to practical items like used cars, clothing, books and CDs, and electronics. Buyers have the option to purchase items in an auction-style format or items can be purchased at a fixed price through a feature called Buy It Now.

EBay is a true global phenomenon. Currently, eBay has local sites that serve Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In addition, eBay has a presence in Latin America through its investment MercadoLibre.com.

EBay also owns PayPal, a leading online payment service with more than 86 million accounts. In 2005, the company purchased Luxembourg-based Skype, a provider of phone calls over the Internet for $2.6 billion. The company also operates Rent.com and Shopping.com.

Revenues for 2007 were $7.67 billion, a 29% increase from the previous year. Net income was $348 million.

Based on fourth quarter market volumes, the following categories delivered $1 billion or more in worldwide annualized gross market volumes: eBay Motors at $17.2 billion; Consumer Electronics at $6.8 billion; Computers at $4.1 billion; Clothing & Accessories at $5.6 billion; Home & Garden at $4.1 billion; Collectibles at $2.9 billion; Books/Music/Movies at $3.3 billion; Sports at $2.9 billion; Business & Industrial at $2.3 billion: Toys at $2.7 billion; Jewelry & Watches at $2.5 billion; Cameras & Photo at $1.8 billion; Antiques & Art at $1.2 billion; Coins & Stamps at 1.2 billion and Tickets & Travel at $2 billion.

The most expensive item sold on eBay to date is a private business jet for $4.9 million.

In 2007, EBay purchased StubHub, an online marketplace for tickets at sporting events and concerts for $310 million.

Long time CEO Meg Whitman will step down on March 31, 2008 and will be replaced by President John Donahoe.

History

EBay was founded in September 1995 by Pierre Omidyar as a site to buy and sell goods. EBay takes its name from the San Franciso Bay Area.

The company went public in 1998. EBay bought PayPal in 2002.

Time Off
- PTO
Employees may use Paid Time Off (PTO) for reasons such as vacation, personal time or illness. PTO accrue at the following rates: 0-12 months = 16 days or 4.92 hours per pay period, with an additional day added for each year of service up to 20 days per year.

- Holidays
10 holidays per year (and one floating holiday of your choice).

- Sabbatical
After five years of service with eBay, you are eligible for 4 weeks of time off with pay. Your sabbatical time away from eBay is intended to provide you with a break from the pace and intensity of your work and allow you the opportunity to recharge and pursue areas of interest to you - be it family, travel, hobbies, personal development or education.
