DHL is the world's third-largest express
package delivery firm behind FedEx and UPS. With its familiar
yellow and red lettering, DHL delivers to 220 countries worldwide
with strong presence in China.
DHL is owned by Deutsche Post World Net
of Germany.
DHL announced rates for 2007, including
a 3.9 percent increase in the net average shipping rate for DHL
Domestic Air Express and International Express, and an average
increase of 4.9 percent for DHL Ground shipments and for DHL@home.
The company uses independent contractors
for delivery and pickup work in many parts of the U.S.
History
In 1969, Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom
and Robert Lynn (D, H, and L) founded
DHL as a service shuttling bills of lading between San Francisco
and Honolulu. The company grew rapidly and in a few years initiated
service to the Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia,
creating an entirely new industry of international door-to-door
express service in the Pacific Basin.
Steady expansion continued in the 1970's
as DHL initiated service to Europe (1974), Latin America (1977),
the Middle East (1978) and Africa (1978). The international delivery
company was the first to bring air express to the Eastern Bloc
countries in 1983 and to the People's Republic of China in 1986.
In 1998, Deutsche Post World Net would
become a shareholder in the company. DHL would invest $1 billion
Euro on a new state-of-the-art cargo fleet including 44 new Boeing
757SF cargo planes for its European and African network.
Deutsche Post completes its acquisition
of DHL in 2002 and expands its Asia network with a joint venture
with Cathay Pacific for express air cargo.
In 2003, DHL's brand is changed to yellow
and red colors. Airborne Express is purchased making the company
the third-largest express carrier in the U.S.
