History

Back in the mid-1970s, David Evans was a 30-something engineer and surveyor with a comfortable career, but he noticed something amiss: There was no freedom. No vision. No fun.

So on April 1, 1976 - with a calculator, a door for a desk, a couple of great clients and high hopes - he started David Evans and Associates, Inc. (DEA). From the outset, he envisioned a different kind of company. He figured that if he gave people the freedom and support to pursue their ambitions, he would attract great people. And great people would do great work. Which would in turn attract more great clients.

Three decades later, DEA has grown into a national leader in sustainable design and management solutions, and has consistently provided its clients with award-winning approaches to transportation, energy, water resources, and land development design, planning, and management. As a result, the company has consistently ranked among Engineering News Record's Top 100 Pure Design firms in the U.S. and among the leaders in many of its local markets.

Benefits

Compensation

If you come to work for DEA, you can expect to receive a fair salary or hourly wage for the work you do. As part of DEA's effort to demonstrate the value placed on professional and support staffs, DEA pays all employees for their overtime. Non-exempt employees receive overtime pay at the rate of 1.5 times their rate of pay. Exempt employees receive additional straight time compensation, in addition to their salaries.

Insurance

DEA pays 100 percent of the premiums for medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees, and offers an option for 100 percent payment of the premiums for their families. In addition, DEA provides employees with life, accidental death and dismemberment and both short- and long-term disability insurance. To help pay for expenses not covered by insurance, DEA provides access to a flexible spending account for medical expenses. Using this account, employees may set aside tax-exempt money to pay for deductibles, co-payments, or other non-reimbursed medical expenses.

Employees at DEA also have access to an Employee Assistance Plan (EAP). EAP is a free, confidential assessment and referral service for employees and their families. EAP deals with a broad range of human issues, including marital/family problems, alcohol or drug abuse, emotional or mental health issues, job performance problems, grief and loss, and financial problems.

Flexibility

"Enjoyment" is one of DEA's core values. While work is important, DEA feels there should be a healthy balance between work, family time and personal pursuits. Therefore, DEA typically doesn't schedule company meetings on weekends, provides flexible work hours to help families with special needs such as child care, provides eight paid holidays per year, and encourages employees to take advantage of its generous vacation and sick leave policies.

Dependent Care

DEA knows that child and elder care expenses can be significant. To help with this obligation, DEA offers a flexible spending account program that allows employees to set aside tax-exempt money to pay for child or other dependent day care.

Education, training and professional development

DEA encourages employees to take part in technical and professional societies and educational programs. It believes that professional effectiveness depends upon an employee's efforts to increase his or her knowledge and skills. As an added benefit, DEA provides access to education loans for employees and their families through the ConSern loan program sponsored through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Retirement

DEA is a privately held, employee-owned company. It provides company-paid retirement benefits through DEA's Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) in which all employees participate. Because the ESOP is a part of its retirement plan, these contributions are tax deferred. Participating in the ESOP also makes each DEA employee a shareholder in the company.

Employees who are interested also may be given the opportunity to purchase DEA stock directly. To help its employees save for the future, DEA provides the opportunity to participate in a 401(k) Plan which includes an employer matching program. These programs underscore DEA's commitment to financial security for its employees and their families.
