Crossgates Mall is one of the largest shopping
malls in upstate New York. It is located off Washington and Western
Avenues in Albany at the beginning of the Adirondack Northway
(I-87). The mall is officially in the Town of Guilderland.
Crossgates opened in March of 1984 and was later expanded in October 1994. It has two levels and over 250 shops, restaurants and cinemas.
Anchor tenants include Macy's, JC Penney, Burlington Coat Factory, Dick's Sporting Goods, Lord & Taylor and Best Buy.
Filene's closed in 2006 due to the merger with Federated Stores. Macy's moved into the larger space at the west end of the mall vacated by Filene's and left its old location in the middle of the mall.
Dick's Sporting Goods opened a new two-floor store in the former Lord and Taylor space in 2009. Lord and Taylor plans to return to Crossgates in September 2014 with a new 100,000 square-foot store that was formerly home to Macy's and Jordan Marsh.
Forever 21 opened an expanded store in the former Dick's Sporting Goods location on April 2010.
Crossgates also has a Regal Cinemas theater with 18 movie screens including an IMAX theatre. An original 12-screen cinema closed in February, 2005.
Restaurants at Crossgates Mall include Ruby Tuesday, Unos, Melting Pot, World of Beer, 110 Grill, Maggie McFly's, The Standard and Johnny Rockets.
A Dave and Buster's restaurant with arcade opened in August 2013. In December 2019, Apex Entertainment opened featuring arcade games, bowling alley, laser tag, bumper cars and virtual reality games.
Across the street from Crossgates Mall off Washington Avenue Extension is Crossgates Commons, which features several big box stores including Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Sports Authority. Sam's Club closed in Crossgates Commons in 2006 and the space was used by Wal-Mart to expand and build a two-level store which has 260,000 square feet and is one of the largest Wal-Mart stores in the nation.
Crossgates is owned by the Pyramid Corp. of Syracuse which also runs the Destiny USA Mall in Syracuse and Palisades Center in West Nyack,
NY.
Crossgates has a parental escort policy that begin in July, 2005 which requires a person over 21 to accompany children under 18 on Friday and Saturday after 4 p.m.
On May 31, 2012, Crossgates Mall banned the use of tobacco on its property.
