Crain Communications publishes 30 weekly
business and trade magazines including Advertising Age, Automotive
News, Modern Physician, B to B and Workforce Magazine. It also
publishes city business magazines for New York, Chicago, Cleveland
and Detroit.
The company was founded in Louisville,
KY in 1916 by G.D. Crain, Jr. with a staff of three people and
two publications...first publishing Class (subsequently renamed
and published by the company today as BtoB) and Hospital Management
(a magazine for hospital administrators, which was sold during
the 1950s). The tiny staff moved to Chicago later in 1916. In
1930, Crain launched Advertising Age, which has become the international
newspaper of marketing and advertising and the company's flagship
publication.
The company remains a family affair with
descendants Keith Crain as Chairman of the company and Rance
Crain as President. Mary Kay Crain is Treasurer and Merrilee
Crain is Secretary of the company.
Crain has over 1,100 employees and 19 locations
around the world.
Benefits
Crain Communications offers excellent benefits
for employees including profit-sharing 401(k) plan and year-end
bonuses. Compared to most 401K plans, the Crain profit-sharing
plan is totally funded by the company. The average contribution
in the 1990s by Crain was 12.7% of the employee's gross income.
Participants in the plan are able to make individual investment
selections providing the opportunity to direct personal plan
assets into certain nationally recognized mutual funds. The company's
profit sharing has been in continuous operation since 1943; its
comprehensive pension plan since 1959; and, the year-end bonus
plan has been maintained for many years.
Other benefits include medical, dental,
disability and life insurance as well as paid time off with holiday,
vacation and personal time.
