Continental is the world's fifth-largest airline. It flew 63 million passengers in 2008 to locations in Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia.

The airline serves 133 domestic and 132 international destinations through Continental, Continental Express and Continental Connection with 2,750 daily departures.

For 2008, Continental reported revenue of $15.2 billion, up $1 billion from the previous year, and a loss of $314 million.

The airline is scheduled to take delivery of 13 Boeing 737-900ER aircraft in 2009, and 11 Boeing 737 and two Boeing 777 aircraft in 2010.

In July, Continental said it is eliminating approximately 1,700 positions across the company, including management and clerical positions to save money. This is in addition to the previously announced elimination of 500 reservation agent positions and special company offered leaves of absence extended for 700 flight attendants.

History

The airline traces its roots to Varney Speed Lines, which began flying from El Paso, TX, to Pueblo, CO, in July 1934. In 1937, Varney Speed Lines changed its name to Continental Airlines. Continental relocated its headquarters to Houston, TX in October 1982 after merging with Texas International.
