Constellation Beers & Spirits imports
into the U.S. some of the world's best beer brands and is one
of the largest producers and marketers of distilled spirits in
the United States. Some of this division's leading brands include
Corona Extra and Corona Light, Modelo Especial, Tsingtao, St.
Pauli Girl, Black Velvet, Fleischmann's and Chi-Chi's.
Globally, Constellation Brands is the largest wine producing company by volume. It is also the third largest U.S. beverage alcohol company based upon retail sales in the food and drug channels. Following the recent join venture between Constellation Brands and Grupo Modelo, our Mexican beer portfolio is the undisputed imported beer leader in the United States, and our North American spirits division ranks among the top in its category.
Constellation announced in February plans to sell its value spirits brands to New Orleans-based Sazerac Company, Inc. for $334 million.
The company has 60 production facilities located in North America, Chile, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.
Sales in fiscal 2008 were more than $3.77 billion.
History
The company was first founded in 1945 by
Marvin Sands as Canandaigua Industries Company. There were eight
employees, and their goal was to sell bulk wine to bottlers in
the East.
The Wild Irish Rose brand was launched
in 1954.
After several acquisitions, the company
became Canandaigua Wine Company in 1972 and went public in 1973.
The company would become Constellation
Brands in 2000 following several more acquisitions in the liquor
and wine industry.
