Recruiting Info
Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP is a leading international law firm, with over 1,100 lawyers from 50 countries working in 13 offices around the world.
The New York office currently has approximately 500 lawyers representing both U.S. and international clients in a wide range of general and highly specialized practice areas. The New York office occupies 10 floors of a modern building in the city's financial district, with a 360-degree panoramic view of New York City and New Jersey. The firm also maintains a conference center in midtown Manhattan for client meetings.
The New York office handles many of the notable corporate transactions, investigations and litigation in the financial world. Cleary's corporate practice includes assignments in capital markets, M&A and joint ventures, corporate counseling, sovereign and international institution representation, privatizations, banking and other financial institution matters, real estate, project finance, structured finance, derivatives and commodities and private equity. The litigation and arbitration practice includes matters involving securities and derivatives, banking and financial institutions, M&A, criminal defense and investigations, antitrust, agency and regulatory, insurance coverage and products liability. The New York practice also covers the multiple dimensions of workouts and bankruptcy, intellectual property, employment and pension issues, individual clients and charitable organizations.
Since the opening of the firm's first European office in 1949, Cleary's legal staff has included European lawyers, most of whom have received a part of their academic legal training in the United States and many of whom have completed traineeships in one of the firm's U.S. offices. The firm was among the first international law firms to hire and promote non-U.S. lawyers as equal partners around the world.
Cleary Gottlieb was founded in New York and Washington simultaneously in 1946 by four former partners in the Wall Street firm of Root Clark Buckner and Ballantine and others who had come from post-war service in the U.S. government.
The firm has 195 partners, 84 of which are based outside the U.S.
