The New York office currently has approximately

in a wide range of general and highly specialized practice areas.
The New York office handles many of the
notable corporate transactions, investigations and litigation
in the financial world. Cleary's corporate practice includes
assignments in capital markets, M&A and joint ventures, corporate
counseling, sovereign and international institution representation,
privatizations, banking and other financial institution matters,

bankruptcy, intellectual property, employment and pension issues,
individual clients and charitable organizations.
Since the opening of the firm's first European
office in 1949, Cleary's legal staff has included European lawyers,
most of whom have received a part of their academic legal training
in the United States and many of whom have completed traineeships
in one of the firm's U.S. offices. The firm was among the
first international law firms to hire and promote non-U.S. lawyers
as equal partners around the world.
Many of the firm's lawyers have trained
as judicial clerks before or shortly after joining the firm.
As of January 1, 2006, more than 50 of the firm's lawyers
have clerked with a U.S. District Court judge, approximately
43 have clerked with a U.S. Court of Appeals judge and six
have clerked with a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. A number
of lawyers also have clerked for judges on the highest court
of various states of the United States and on courts of other
countries, including the European Court of Justice.
Cleary Gottlieb was founded in New
York and Washington simultaneously in 1946 by four former partners
in the Wall Street firm of Root Clark Buckner and Ballantine
and others who had come from post-war service in the U.S. government.
The firm has 180 partners, 70 of which
