Chipotle is a fast-growing chain of Mexican fast-food restaurants offering high-quality ingredients including beans, rice and vegetables and naturally-raised meats including pork, chicken and beef in burritos, burrito bowls, tacos and salads. There are now 1,595 restaurants nationwide and in Canada and England.
Chipotle promotes its quality ingredients as Food With Integrity. It finds organic and local produce and farms that treat animals with respect and dignity. Chipotle said it will serve more than 15 million pounds of locally grown produce in 2013, up from 10 million.
Chipotle reported revenues of $3.21 billion in 2013, a 17.7% increase, and net income of $327.4 million.
"We are very proud of our accomplishments during 2013. Over the past 20 years, we have created a very unique and special restaurant company. Chipotle is a place that appeals to a diverse customer base throughout the country and beyond. We offer our customers a range of flavors from a focused selection of beautiful, top-quality ingredients that are expertly prepared by a passionate team of extraordinary people. Our focus on our unique people and food cultures has created an impressive demand for a restaurant experience that is redefining fast food for the better," said Steve Ells, Founder, Chairman and Co-CEO of Chipotle.
The company opened 185 new restaurants in 2013 and expects to open 180-195 new restaurants this year.
Chipotle opened Shophouse in Washington, DC in 2011, a test of a Southeast Asian-restaurant concept. The company now has six Shophouse locations in the DC area and Los Angeles.
Steve Ells founded Chipotle in 1993 offering a simple menu of great food prepared fresh every day. The idea was simple: demonstrate that food served fast didn't have to be a "fast-food" experience.
Prior to launching Chipotle, Mr. Ells worked for two years at Stars restaurant in San Francisco. Mr. Ells graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history. He is also a 1990 Culinary Institute of America graduate.
McDonald's first invested in Chipotle in 1998.
The company went public in a January, 2006 IPO and was spun off from McDonald's corporation.
