Chipotle operates a chain of Mexican fast-food restaurants offering high-quality ingredients including beans, rice and vegetables and naturally-raised meats including pork, chicken and beef in burritos, burrito bowls, tacos, quesadillas and salads. There are now over 2,850 restaurants nationwide and in France, Germany, Canada and England.

While many chains depend on franchising, Chipotle stores are owned entirely by the company.

Chipotle promotes its quality ingredients as Food With Integrity. It finds organic and local produce and farms that treat animals with respect and dignity.

The company reported total revenues of $6.0 billion in 2020, an increase of 7.0%, and net income of $355.7 million.

Chipotle has a national delivery partnership with DoorDash and digital sales accounted for 48.5% of revenue in the recent quarter. Most restaurants are have separate build lines for delivery and online orders.

The chain launched a rewards program in 2019 and now has over 24 million members.

Chipotle opened its first digital only location for pickup and delivery orders in Highland Falls, NY in November 2020.

The company has been opening new restaurants with drive-thru lanes called Chipotlanes. There are nearly 200 restaurants now with Chipotlanes.

For 2021, Chipotle expects to open 200 new restaurants.

Steve Ells founded Chipotle in 1993 offering a simple menu of great food prepared fresh every day. The idea was simple: demonstrate that food served fast didn't have to be a "fast-food" experience.

Prior to launching Chipotle, Mr. Ells worked for two years at Stars restaurant in San Francisco. Mr. Ells graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history. He is also a 1990 Culinary Institute of America graduate.

McDonald's first invested in Chipotle in 1998.

The company went public in a January, 2006 IPO and was spun off from McDonald's corporation.

In 2015, the chain was hurt by declining sales after an outbreak of e coli bacteria in some restaurants scared off customers and forced the company to change its food preparation practices.

Chipotle closed Shophouse, a chain of 15 Southeast Asian-restaurants in 2017.

In September 2017, the chain launched queso at all stores nationwide.

The company moved its headquarters in 2018 from Denver to Newport Beach, CA.

Brian Niccol, former CEO of Taco Bell, became CEO of Chipotle in March 2018.
