Chipotle is a fast-growing chain of Mexican fast-food restaurants offering high-quality ingredients including beans, rice and vegetables and naturally-raised meats including pork, chicken and beef in burritos, burrito bowls, tacos and salads. There are now 1,780 restaurants nationwide and in Canada and England.
Chipotle promotes its quality ingredients as Food With Integrity. It finds organic and local produce and farms that treat animals with respect and dignity. Chipotle said it served more than 15 million pounds of locally grown produce in 2013.
Chipotle reported revenues of $4.11 billion in 2014, a 27.8% increase, and net income of $445.4 million.
The company reported higher costs for food including beef, avocado and dairy.
The company opened 192 new restaurants in 2014 and expects to open 190-205 new restaurants this year.
"We continue to make significant progress on our important journey to change the way people think about and eat fast food," said Steve Ells, chairman and co-CEO of Chipotle. "Consumer trends are changing, which we believe is a great result of people becoming more discerning about where their food comes from, how it was raised, and how their meal was prepared. The continued loyalty we see from our customers, as well as third party research, and the growing number of concepts imitating Chipotle, all point to the relevance of our vision and the impact we are having on food culture. We are delighted to see that this vision, a very lofty goal, is becoming a reality."
Chipotle opened Shophouse in Washington, DC in 2011, a test of a Southeast Asian-restaurant concept. The company now has nine Shophouse locations in the DC area and Los Angeles. It also is an investor in an entity that owns and operates two Pizzeria Locale restaurants.
Steve Ells founded Chipotle in 1993 offering a simple menu of great food prepared fresh every day. The idea was simple: demonstrate that food served fast didn't have to be a "fast-food" experience.
Prior to launching Chipotle, Mr. Ells worked for two years at Stars restaurant in San Francisco. Mr. Ells graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history. He is also a 1990 Culinary Institute of America graduate.
McDonald's first invested in Chipotle in 1998.
The company went public in a January, 2006 IPO and was spun off from McDonald's corporation.
