The Cheesecake Factory operates 139 full-service,
casual dining restaurants under The Cheesecake Factory name in
major metropolitan areas in the United States. The chain is best
known for its cheesecakes with over 50 varieties based on their
own recipes.
Some of the most popular cheesecakes include
the Original Cheesecake, White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle, Chocolate
Peanut Butter Cookie-Dough, Kahlua Almond Fudge, Dutch Apple
Caramel Streusel, Fresh Strawberry and Triple Chocolate Brownie
Truffle. The cheesecakes aren't made at each restaurant but at
two bakery production facilities that ship the cakes and baked
goods to restaurants and for other leading foodservice operators,
retailers and distributors.
Customers also flock to the restaurants
because of the restaurant's huge menu with over 200 items including
appetizers, pizza, seafood, steaks, chicken, burgers, pasta,
specialty items, salads, sandwiches and omelets.
Cheesecake Factory restaurants currently
range in size from 5,400 to 21,000 square feet, provide full
liquor service and are generally open seven days a week for lunch
and dinner, including Sunday brunch. The average guest check
at Cheesecake Factory is $17.50. Each restaurant averages $10.6
million in sales, one of the highest in the business.
Restaurants feature high ceilings, French
limestone floors and decorative columns, hand-painted fabrics,
contemporary lighting and an abundance of cherry wood.
The Company also operates Grand Lux Cafe,
an upscale casual dining restaurant concept with 13 locations
and a broad menu of 150 items. Average annual sales are $12.6
million per unit.
The Company also operates two bakery production
facilities in Calabasas Hills, CA and Rocky Mount, NC that produce
over 50 varieties of quality cheesecakes and other baked products.
Additionally, the Company operates one self-service, limited
menu express foodservice operation and licenses two bakery cafe
outlets to another foodservice operator.
In 2007, Cheesecake Factory reported record
revenues of $1.51 billion and net income was $73.9 million.
During fiscal 2007, the Company opened
21 new restaurants, including eight Cheesecake Factory restaurants
and three Grand Lux Cafes during the fourth quarter.
In fiscal 2008, the Company plans to open
between seven and nine new restaurants, consisting of six to
eight Cheesecake Factory restaurants, as well as the initial
unit of its newest concept, Rock Sugar Pan Asian Kitchen.
History
In the late 1940's Evelyn Overton opened
a small cheesecake shop in Detroit. In order to raise her two
small children, David and Renee, Evelyn gave up the shop and
moved her baking to her basement kitchen, where she continued
supplying local restaurant clients with her cakes. Then in 1972,
with her children grown, Evelyn and her husband Oscar decided
to move the business to Los Angeles. Oscar concentrated on selling
cakes and building new accounts while Evelyn baked and managed
the office. Finding that Los Angeles loved Evelyn's cheesecakes
as much as Detroit, their reputation and sales grew! A larger,
new and improved bakery was born, creating over 20 varieties
of Evelyn's delicious cheesecakes and other incredible desserts
which were sold to wholesalers from Santa Barbara to San Diego
and eventually out of state.
On Tuesday, February 25, 1978, the Overtons
founded the first full service restaurant, "The Cheesecake
Factory," which opened in Beverly Hills. Today, Evelyn and
Oscar's son, David carries on the same commitment to quality,
entrepreneurial spirit, energy and creativity that his parents
inspired.
The Cheesecake Factory went public in 1992.
