Bebe's product offering includes a full range of separates, tops, sweaters, dresses, active wear and accessories in the following lifestyle categories: career, evening, casual and active. The company designs and develops the majority of its merchandise in-house, which is manufactured to specifications. The remainder of merchandise is sourced directly from third-party manufacturers.
Products are marketed under the bebe, BEBE SPORT, bbsp and 2b bebe brand names through 228 retail stores, of which 178 are bebe stores, 50 are 2b bebe stores. These stores are located in the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Canada. Bebe also distributes and sells bebe branded product through its licensees in approximately 26 countries.
For fiscal 2014, Bebe reported sales of $484.7 million, down 8.7%. Net loss for the year was $77.4 million.
The company plans to close six bebe stores the rest of this year along with one 2b bebe store.
History
Manny Mashouf founded the company with the first Bebe store boutique opening in San Francisco in 1976. At that time, three categories dominated the women's wear market: junior, bridge and missy. Having discovered a demographic that was neither junior nor bridge, Manny aimed to break the mold, offering this under represented population of stylish women inspirational, sexy fashion.
