Bear, Stearns & Co. is a major global
investment banking, securities trading and brokerage firm. The
company helps corporations, institutions, governments and individuals
reach their financial objectives through investment banking,
raising capital and financial advice.
JPMorgan Chase announced a deal in March
to acquire Bear Stearns for $10 a share with financial backing
from the Federal Reserve. The deal was made to rescue Bear Stearns
from potential bankruptcy due to large withdrawals of money from
clients. The initial deal was just $2 per share but was raised
one week later. A large number of Bear Stearns employees will
likely lose their jobs.
Bear Stearns operates businesses in three
core areas:

3. Global Clearing Services
Headquartered in New York City, the firm
has offices in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los
Angeles, San Francisco and San Juan. The company is trying to
expand its European presence in London. It also has international
offices in Beijing, Dublin, Hong Kong, Lugano, Milan, São
Paulo, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo.
In fiscal 2007, Bear Stearns reported revenues
of $5.9 billion, a drop from $9.2 billion the previous year,
and net income of $233 million. The company has been hurt by
mortgage problems and ownership of mortgage-backed securities.
It has laid off about 1,000 workers during the past year.
The company was founded in 1923 and has
turned a profit every year in business. It went public in 1985.
