History

Baptist Health was created in 1990, but its tradition of medical excellence goes back decades.

Baptist Hospital is a 577-bed facility located in the Kendall area of south Miami-Dade County, just 20 minutes from Miami International Airport. Founded in 1960, the hospital offers a wide range of medical, surgical and technological services. Today, the hospital is a major medical center, attracting patients from all over the U.S., the Caribbean, Latin America and beyond. More than 32,000 people are hospitalized at Baptist each year; about 75,000 receive emergency care in our 24-hour Emergency Center and Children's Emergency Center. Also located on the campus are Baptist Children's Hospital and Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute, as well as the Regional Cancer Program and the Baptist-South Miami Diabetes Care Center.

South Miami Hospital also opened its doors in 1960, only five miles east of Baptist in the city of South Miami. This 445-bed hospital is accredited with a commendation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations, as are all Baptist Health hospitals. In 2004, the hospital was recognized as a Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a part of American Nurses Association.

Homestead Hospital, originally opened in 1940 off Krome Avenue as one of the first hospitals in Miami-Dade County.  Nearly 70 years later, a new Homestead Hospital opened on Campbell Drive (SW 312 Street) and SW 147 Avenue to serve the growing the growing population.  The new hospital is three times the size of the former facility, and has the latest technology and equipment.  Natural light, soothing colors, plenty of open spaces and private rooms help create a warm and healing environment.  Serving the largest geographical area of any hospital in Miami-Dade, Homestead Hospital is the only hospital located in the lower 18 miles of the county.  The 120-bed hospital cares for 7,940 admissions and 40,000 emergency visits a year.

Benefits

Employee Health Coverage
Employees have a choice from a variety of health plans. If an employee is already covered under another health insurance policy, he or she may be eligible to receive a cash credit. Choosing the right health coverage is an important decision for you and your family, so that you have the health plan that best suits your needs. These plans provide preventive coverage, in addition to giving comprehensive coverage for major illness and disability. Employees who live in Monroe County have the option of participating in a self-funded health plan specific to that geographic area.
Our health plans offer prescription drug benefits with low co-pays for generic drugs and reasonable co-pays for formulary and non-formulary medications.
Dental Coverage
Employees have a choice of dental plans, most of which include some coverage for orthodontics. There are two Dental Maintenance Organizations (DMO), one Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and the Mariners Dental Plan (open to employees who live in Monroe County). If you enroll in the DMO, you will need to choose your dentist from a list of participating providers in order to get coverage for dental services. If you choose the PPO or Mariners Dental Plan, you may use any dental provider you like, but when you use a PPO Provider (In-Network) you get more coverage and can save money.

Vision Care
Baptist Health offers two vision plans. Coverage may be selected for either an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)
$10,000 basic group life insurance and $10,000 AD&D is available at no cost to eligible employees. Supplemental life insurance and AD&D coverage, up to three times the eligible employee's annual salary, may be purchased by you at a nominal additional cost.
Dependent Life Insurance
Employees may elect to purchase life insurance for their spouses and dependents at affordable rates.
Short-Term Disability Insurance
This program gives you financial security in the event of a short-term illness or injury in conjunction with your Paid Time Off (PTO) program. As part of the Benefits Advantage core coverage, Baptist Health provides you with payments during periods of short-term disability equal to 60 percent of your salary. This option takes effect after 14 days of consecutive absence due to both accident and illness, and has a maximum benefit period of 24 weeks, and a maximum benefit of $750 per week.
Long-Term Disability Insurance
As part of the Benefits Advantage core coverage, Baptist Health provides you with payments during periods of long-term disability equal to 60 percent of your monthly salary, up to a maximum of $5,000 a month, if you cannot work because of a disability. Benefits are payable after short-term disability ends (after 26 weeks). This benefit costs you nothing.
The need for legal services is a part of everyday life. For example, if you buy a home, need a will, are involved in an automobile accident, adopt a child or have problems with a contractor, you may need an attorney. Retaining a lawyer for these services can be very expensive. Baptist Health provides you with the opportunity to participate in a prepaid legal services plan.
Medical Flexible Spending Accounts
No matter how much medical, dental or vision coverage you have, some of your costs will not be covered by insurance. One easy way to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare costs is through a medical flexible spending account. You make regular deposits through payroll deduction. When you have qualified healthcare expenses, you submit a claim, and a check reimbursing you for the expense is sent to you. Here's how you save: You pay no Federal Income Tax (FIT) or Social Security (FICA) tax on money deposited into these accounts to pay for qualified expenses. That means you keep money you would otherwise pay to the Internal Revenue Service.
Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts
You may be eligible to open a flexible spending account to pay dependent care expenses. These expenses may be for reimbursement of care of your children or other dependent family members, as well as for summer day camps. This account works like the medical flexible spending account, but you must be a member of the Florida Health Systems Credit Union to participate.

Paid Time Off (PTO)
Regular part-time and full-time employees earn PTO (paid time off). This time accrues based on the number of hours you work (up to 80 hours a pay period). You may use this paid time off for holidays you wish to celebrate with family and friends, vacations, sick-time, to take a sick child to the doctor, to do volunteer work or whatever you choose. Just remember that you must schedule your paid time off with your supervisor and adhere to departmental policies for holidays, vacations, sick days and other uses of time off.
Family Medical Leave of Absence
Eligible employees may take an unpaid leave of absence pursuant to the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) if they have worked for Baptist Health for at least one year for at least 1,250 hours over the previous 12 months. FMLA provided leave may be for up to 12 weeks within a 52-week period, and is job-protected. FMLA may be taken for the following reasons:
to care for your child after birth, adoption, or placement in foster care.
to care for a spouse, son, daughter, grandparent (if you work in Miami-Dade County, Florida), or parent who has a serious health condition.
for a serious health condition that makes you unable to perform your job.
If you have any questions about FMLA, please contact Human Resources or the Disability Management department.

Bereavement Leave
Bereavement leave of up to three paid days is provided to eligible employees upon the death of a member of the immediate family for funeral, memorial, or personal bereavement observance.
Paid Military Leave of Absence

Employees called to annual active military training will be paid at their normal rate of pay offset by military pay and subsistence for up to two weeks per year. All employees are eligible for a Military Leave of Absence.
Leave Sharing
Employees may voluntarily donate their earned Paid Time Off (PTO) to other employees who have exhausted theirs and are suffering hardship due to certain emergencies. During the period the recipient continues to be in a paid status using PTO, Baptist Health will continue prior-elected benefits.

Retirement Plan and Matching Contributions
Baptist Health Retirement Plan offers a 403(b) plan for those employed by the not-for-profit affiliates of the organization, or a 401(k) for those employed by the for-profit Baptist Outpatient Services. Employees may contribute pre-tax dollars from current income into the plan. Employees are eligible to participate in a plan after six months of employment but may begin contributing through payroll deductions from the date of hire.
Employees who work 1,000 hours and are on the payroll as of December 31 of a calendar year are eligible for a 3% of annual compensation basic contribution in the Baptist Health Retirement Plan. Employee contributions of up to 4% of annual compensation will be matched by Baptist at a rate of 50 cents for each $1 dollar contributed by the employee (up to 2% match contribution by Baptist). Under certain conditions, employees may borrow money from their retirement plan without penalty. However, employees do have to pay interest on their borrowed funds. The Baptist Retirement Plan is administered by AIG VALIC and representatives are available to consult with employees and explain the various investment options.

The election is made during the benefits open enrollment period. Employees in need of immediate cash may be eligible for assistance through our Paid Time Off (PTO) Emergency Cash-Out Program. It can be used for medical expenses from accident or illness, imminent loss of home, the impact of catastrophes such as those caused by fire, floods, hurricanes, vehicle purchase or repair (over $500.), legal fees for domestic/child custody issues. Employees can also cash out PTO for purchase of a principal residence and yearly college tuition expenses for themselves, spouses or dependent children. Because of tax laws, these cash-outs include a 6% reduction that is donated to the Sunshine Fund.

Employees having financial difficulties may contact the Pastoral Care office at any hospital site for assistance. The Sunshine Fund contains money donated by co-workers and other generous individuals. Based upon employee need, Pastoral Care may issue interest-free loans.
Tuition Assistance
As part of a learning organization, employees are encouraged to continuously upgrade their education. Regular part-time and full-time employees are eligible for tuition reimbursement for accredited technical and trade schools and undergraduate programs which are in some way related to health care.
