American Century Investments is a leading
investment manager with nearly 50 years of experience helping
investors achieve their financial goals. Serving investment professionals,
institutions, corporations and 1.6 million individual investors,
American Century offers a broad array of products across a variety
of investment disciplines.
Based in Kansas City,
the company manages approximately $100 billion in assets through
mutual funds, separate accounts, commingled trusts, subadvisory
accounts and institutional class funds.
American Century Investments made Fortune
magazine's 2006 list of the "100 Best Companies to Work
for." This is the seventh year in a row the company made
the list.
History
The company was started by James Stowers
Jr. along with other investors in 1958 with $107,000. When American
Century (formerly Twentieth Century Investments) opened its doors
in Kansas City, MO, it offered investors two funds - Growth Investors
and Income Investors (now Select).
Recognizing the value of the computer to
the investment business, Mr. Stowers pioneered the use of computers
in portfolio management in 1973. He designed the comprehensive
portfolio analysis system and wrote the software programs used
by American Century Investment Management, Inc., to manage the
funds and track data on more than 18,000 securities. He also
designed the company's shareholder accounting system and terminal
screens and wrote the software programs used in today's operation
of the funds.
In June of 1995, Twentieth Century Investors
merged with The Benham Group, a prominent fixed-income investment
management firm in Mountain View, California. Benham was the
first company to offer an all-treasury money market investment
and continues to forge new approaches to fixed-income management
with zero coupon bond funds and a wide array of other specialized
fixed-income fund offerings.
Stowers' son, James III, is the chairman
of the company.
